Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an independent, medical, emergency relief organisation that provides assistance to people worldwide, regardless of their background, religion or political convictions. Above all, we aim to save lives and to offer medical care to victims of disasters, wars and epidemics. Working together with local staff, we give direct support to the population. MSF also appeals to those in power, including governments and international organisations, and speaks out about the abuses we encounter in the course of our work.

MSF coordinates operations through collaborations between global offices. ‘Artsen zonder Grenzen Nederland’ (MSF-Holland) has a partnership with offices in the UK and Germany. This partnership, known as ‘MSF Operational Centre Amsterdam’ (MSF-OCA), operates medical humanitarian interventions in about 25 countries. Annually, MSF-OCA deploys approximately 1,100 international staff and employs 7,000 national staff.

The office of MSF-Holland located in Amsterdam hosts more than 300 employees, offering direct support to MSF-OCA operations.

The Human Resources Management (HRM) department in MSF-Holland consists of approximately 50 people working in the units Administration Services, HRM Excellence, Office HR, Pool Management, Psychosocial Care and Recruitment Career Management.

The unit HRM Excellence helps design and project manage the HRM department’s efforts in building a high-impact HR operating model throughout MSF-OCA. The HR professionals in this unit work closely together with internal and external stakeholders on key expertise areas such as Talent, Reward, HR Analytics, Metrics and Technology.

HR Reward Specialist (100%)
Based in Amsterdam

As the HR Reward Specialist you will report to the Coordinator HR Excellence. You are part of the Excellence team in the HRM department.


  • To provide expert advice and specialist support to MSF-OCA in the field of Compensation and Benefits,
  • To develop regulations, policies and procedures for an effective reward strategy execution, and monitor and evaluate their proper usage,
  • To support practical implementation of reward-related policies and programmes, both in the field missions and OCA (Operations Centre Amsterdam), by monitoring and safeguarding compliance with principles,
  • To contribute to increased alignment within Compensation Benefits globally by working effectively within MSF international HR platforms.


  • Develops and proposes policies, procedures and processes in the field of expertise, including designing supporting tools and instruments, which are flexible and adaptable to specific contexts and local interests, as well as being and compliant with MSF values, principles and standards on the other hand;
  • Monitors and evaluates the functioning of regulations, policies and procedures in the field of expertise;
  • Provides guidance in translating overarching rules to specifics of local situation (example: implementation of revised salary grid, revised function grid or benchmarking results);
  • Enables systematic problem-solving and decision-making in the area of expertise;
  • Advises on and initiates intra-, interdepartmental or intersectional activities in the area of expertise. Drives ideas and improvement proposals;
  • Participates in scheduling plans for organisation wide and local-level implementation of policies, procedures and programmes;
  • Manages own time (long- and short-term) and regularly reports on status of activities,
  • Develops and facilitates relevant HR modules for internal training;
  • Builds communities of expertise and regularly shares knowledge, developments and project status with peers, stakeholders and colleagues;
  • Occasional travel required, mainly for intersectional meetings (10%).

Qualifications and experience

  • University degree (Business Administration, Human Resources or related field preferred);
  • Minimum 3 years of demonstrated experience within Reward area;
  • Hands-on experience with job analysis, function grids, salary benchmarking, and pay modelling;
  • Proven ability to yield results in an advisory role;
  • Track record in policy development tool development, navigating between values, strategy and operations;
  • True working experience in an international environment, with daily collaboration with and within multicultural groups;
  • Networking agility, ability to effectively interact between diverse stakeholders and units and across organisational hierarchy;
  • Languages: English fluent; French desirable;
  • Excel proficiency;
  • Project planning and project management experience is a plus;
  • NGO experience is a plus.

  • Initiative, problem analysis proactive solution development;
  • Quality orientation, persuasiveness, negotiation skills;

Meer informatie


  • A challenging and exciting position in an international environment.
  • A contract for one year with a full time appointment based on 5 days per week, with the option for renewal. If found suitable, preference will be given to candidates able to start on the date required.
  • The Reward Specialist is in scale 6 with a gross monthly salary between € 2,737 and € 3,909 based on relevant experience for this position and for a 40-hours working week.
  • Other benefits include 30 holidays based on a fulltime appointment and a premium-free pension plan.
